A & D Truck & Auto Parts sits at 450 S. 11th Street, in the Walker's Point industrial area on Milwaukee's near south side. It is a truck and auto parts yard first: vehicles come into the lot, and the parts that come off them, engines, transmissions, doors, body panels, wheels, hubs, rotors, alternators and starters, are pulled here rather than shipped in from a warehouse somewhere else.
Repeat buyers come back for a second transmission or a third alternator, and call the counter before they drive over to make sure the part is on the shelf.

Tagged, shelved and easy to find
Every part that comes off a vehicle gets a stock number written on it in grease pencil before it goes on a shelf or a rack. Alternators and starters are sorted by make, with a hand-marked FOREIGN aisle set apart from the domestic shelving. Steering columns and other interior parts hang from the rafters. Wheels are numbered on their own rack, and doors and panels are racked outdoors by type.
David, known to most customers as Dave, works the front counter. He is the one who checks the shelf when you call with a year, make and model, and the one who has your part ready when you come to pick it up. That is possible because of the tagging, not in spite of it.
